Hersheygoba? Hershey Buys Dagoba!
I was getting ready to do a post on the new single origin bars from Dagoba (I'll get to those later I guess) and then this lands in my inbox. It seems that buying Scharffen Berger wasn't enough for them and now Hershey has bought Dagoba. They don't seem to have ruined Scharffen Berger, but I'm not sure if a giant corporate beast can help but change a small-batch artisanal chocolate maker like Dagoba.
Let the FUD begin.

this is truly sucky news, and i'm surprised the nice people at dagoba sold out. but c'est la vie. btw, i disagree about scharfie. i think it has noticeably declined since its purchase, even tho' i confess it was far from a fave for me to begin with.

I really wonder why they sold. Committment and vision and ethics don't mix well with corporations - they tend to be detrimental to the bottom line. I can't imagine that the values of the company can be maintained in the new regime unless Hershey decides that consumers are willing to pay a significant premium for a product that espouses those values. It just seems to me that so many of the things that make Dagoba special are going to be viewed as unnecessary expenses.
I'd also like to know what their founder is going to do now. His vision is about to be compromised on a grand scale and I can't imagine that it would be fun to watch that happen to the company he put so much work and love into.
