Dagoba Recall
I don't like to post negative stories. This one I figure I should, just because I'm a Dagoba cheerleader and talk about them a good bit around here. During routine testing they discovered high levels of lead in some of their bars and as a result are doing a recall. According to their site it seems that the problem lies on the supply end and is not attributable to their production process. They are working to determine why it happened and to ensure that it does not happen again. The bars effected are the Eclipse, Los Rios, and Prima Materia. There is an extensive FAQ on the Dagoba site and lot numbers are available at both of the links below.

Wowsers! I haven't tried any of those bars.
The most recent thing I bought of theirs was a package of cacao nibs.
I hope they get it worked out.

I buy Dagoba New Moon all the time.
The testing of the ingredients should have been done before the bars were produced, not after.

You would think that testing the materials before using them would be the sensible thing to do. If you make thousands of pounds of chocolate bars with bad chocolate you've wasted tons of time and money. If you catch it before it goes into production then you save all of that lost money not to mention preventing the PR debacle that admitting to shipping lead-filled bars out entails. I would really think that testing would happen at both ends. You test the raw materials as well as the end product. But that's just me. *shrugs*
I have one Los Rios in my pantry and I haven't looked at it to see if it is in range. I doubt it is since it's kind of old, but I'll definitely be checking before I eat it.
